Armagh Theatre Installs New A&H GLD Mixer

Market Place Theatre & Arts Centre in Armagh, Northern Ireland, has become one of the first venues in the world to install Allen & Heath’s new GLD digital mixer, comprising a GLD-80 mixer plus an AR84 I/O rack in the control room, and an AR2412 rack down on the stage floor. Replacing an existing analogue desk, the installation is part of a wider overhaul of the venue’s analogue audio infrastructure, which includes installing Cat5 around the building to allow connection of an expander I/O rack to the GLD-80 mixer.
“We have a team of four technicians, and we all put forward names of desks we thought may be suitable, as well as consulting industry colleagues. We demoed a few desks before making our choice but the GLD came out on top for price, ease of use and input capacity. Moreover, it sounded the best in our comparison listening tests,” commented technician, Gary Bawden.
The venue hosts many different types of events, including theatre, music, dance, comedy and conferences, which the new GLD system will be managing.
“We’ve been really impressed with how easy it is to configure and move things around on the desk. Being able to colour code things is a neat feature. Also, the way this desk accesses auxiliaries is really good, almost a reverse logic of most other desks. The RTA is amazing and makes it so easy to squeak your monitors,” concludes Gary.

Sound Media Concepts Provides Harman's Soundcraft Si Compact 32 and JBL PRX Loudspeakers at Calvary Apostolic Church
HAMPDEN, Maine — In order to accommodate the new sound requirements at Calvary Apostolic Church’s temporary facility in Hampden, Maine, Sound Media Concepts has deployed HARMAN’s Soundcraft Si Compact 32 and JBL Professional PRX portable PA loudspeakers for weekly Sunday services and Wednesday’s Bible study sessions.
The Calvary Apostolic Church, which was completely destroyed in a fire in 2011, wanted to upgrade its facility and bring it back to life. Currently, the church is in a semi-temporary building, however, “The Si Compact will give the church plenty of flexibility when it is time to move to the permanent building,” said Jason Mathews, Owner of Sound Media Concepts.
“We needed something that was compact enough to be portable and also extremely easy to use, but could be integrated into the new facility once it’s complete,” Mathews stated. “Ever since I demoed the Si3 when it was introduced, I fell in love with Soundcraft and the Si series. It is extremely user-friendly and the fact that Soundcraft now has an affordable compact digital console of this quality allows smaller congregations the opportunity to take advantage of the latest technology with the breathing room expand in the future.” The ease of use of the Si Compact is another advantage for this small but growing church, as most of the time the operators are volunteers, Mathews explained. Queensland University Of Technology Relies on AKG DMS700 Digital Wireless Microphones
In need of a technology upgrade for its lecture halls, which host more than 50,000 students during the academic year, Australia’s Queensland University of Technology’s (QUT) Audiovisual Projects Department installed a campus-wide digital wireless solution to replace its existing analog system. Supported by Len Lotz and Shane Palmer of Videopro, the Queensland-based technology integrator, QUT now has more than 400 educational spaces across multiple buildings channelled with AKG DMS700 digital wireless solution.
QUT’s wireless channels were already crowded, nearly reaching its capacity, which put constant stress on the channels and brought interference to lectures throughout campus. Recently, with a decision to advance campus technology and expand the CBD area, QUT would require additional channels of wireless, which would not be supported by their previous analog system. AKG’s DMS700 was selected as it offered a tactical answer, addressing all of the issues related to overcrowded bandwidth and completely eliminating interference. DMS700’s ultra-wide tuning range also offered the greatest degree of flexibility to work around uncertain frequency allocations in the future, as the Australian government redistributes allocations of UHF spectrum.
AKG’s DMS700 is designed to deliver the highest quality and operability to users. DMS700 allowed QUT to provide a significantly larger number of channels, in addition to the clarity and reliability of the digital signal. Its quick and easy setup allows anyone within the university, from the technical team, to professors and students to easily turn on and distribute their audio throughout QUT.

Markham Theatre Looks to Countryman For High Quality Audio — Microphones and Direct Boxes Integral to Performances
Located on the outskirts of greater Toronto, the Markham Theatre for Performing Arts is one of Canada's premier theatre houses. With over 300 live performances each year, including live theatre, concerts, comedy shows, and family entertainment providing an ever-changing array of performing arts, the theatre presents a performance calendar that showcases the cultural diversity of the area. As with any performing arts facility, the success of any performance directly correlates to the quality of audio—that’s why the Markham Theatre relies on its arsenal of subminiature microphones and direct boxes from Menlo Park, CA-based Countryman Associates.
Chris MacBride has worked at the Markham Theatre for Performing Arts since 1996 and has served as the Technical Supervisor for the past 6 years. During his career, he has worked in many areas of the business—from theatre to musicals to corporate industrial special events. At the Markham Theatre, he is responsible for specifying all technical equipment and he recently designed and oversaw the installation of a new audio system by RP Dynamics Inc. As part of this, there is an extensive collection of Countryman products.
“Presently, our Countryman microphone roster includes sixteen Countryman E6 Directional Earset mics, ten E2 Earset models, two Isomax 2 All-Purpose mics, two Isomax 4RF Podium mics, and four B3 Omni Round Lavaliere mics,” MacBride reports. “We also use the company’s direct (DI) boxes for bringing instruments into the mixing console. We have one Type 85 DI, eight Type 10 DIs, and two of the Type 10S Stereo DI units. Some of this equipment is new and was placed into service this past July while other equipment dates back a good fourteen years. When you consider the relatively short life span of so much electronic equipment these days, the fact that we’ve had some of our Countryman equipment for so many years speaks volumes about the company’s quality and reliability.”
